Bloom
Bloom is an interactive artist's book that celebrates the quiet beauty, resilience, and endless variety of the natural world.
Constructed as a circular, rotating book inspired by the form of a flower, it is bound with thin plywood covers and assembled
using screw bolts that allow each page to rotate independently. As the pages are turned and repositioned, Bloom transforms
into an almost limitless array of petal arrangements, making every viewing a unique composition. No two configurations are
exactly alike, echoing the infinite diversity found in nature itself.
Each circular page features original hand-drawn botanical illustrations paired with preserved flower petals gathered from
living plants. The combination of detailed illustrations and authentic botanical specimens creates a dialogue between artistic
interpretation and the natural materials that inspired it. Familiar flowers—including sunflowers, hydrangeas, poppies, lilies,
and chrysanthemums—appear alongside delicate pressed petals, preserving moments of beauty long after their brief bloom
has faded.
The book's structure is integral to its meaning. The rotating pages mimic the unfolding of petals, the movement of blossoms
in the wind, and the ever-changing patterns found in gardens and wild landscapes. Rather than presenting a fixed sequence,
Bloom invites viewers to participate in the work, rearranging the pages to discover new relationships of color, form, and
composition with every turn.
More than a botanical study, Bloom is a meditation on gratitude and wonder. It encourages us to slow down and notice the
extraordinary gifts nature offers each day—the emergence of new blossoms, the brilliance of color, the intricacy of organic forms,
and the quiet cycles of growth, decline, and renewal. By combining hand-rendered illustrations with preserved botanical
specimens in an endlessly reconfigurable structure, Bloom becomes both a celebration of nature's beauty and a reminder that
transformation is constant, and that even the simplest flower holds infinite possibilities.
Artist Statement
Flowers have been woven into my life for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are of walking through my
grandmother's garden, where every season offered new colors, fragrances, and discoveries. Those experiences taught me
that flowers are more than beautiful objects—they are markers of memory, symbols of hope, and quiet reminders that life is
constantly changing. As I have traveled, from the meticulously cultivated gardens of Japan to the formal landscapes of France
and countless gardens in between, that fascination has only deepened. Though each culture celebrates flowers differently,
they all recognize their remarkable ability to communicate what words often cannot.
Flowers accompany us through nearly every significant moment in life. They are exchanged between lovers, carried by brides,
offered to hosts in gratitude, delivered to hospital rooms in hopes of healing, and given to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries,
achievements, and new beginnings. They also stand beside us in our deepest grief, lining funeral homes and memorials as
silent expressions of sympathy and remembrance. Throughout our lives, flowers become witnesses to both joy and sorrow,
quietly carrying emotions that are difficult to express.
Bloom grew from this realization. I wanted to create an artist's book that reflects not only the beauty of flowers, but also their
enduring presence throughout the human experience. The circular, rotating structure allows the pages to be rearranged into
an ever-changing array of petal formations, much like a garden that is never exactly the same from one season—or even one
day—to the next. Original botanical illustrations are paired with preserved flower petals, bringing together artistic interpretation
and fragments of nature itself.
For me, Bloom is an invitation to slow down and notice the extraordinary beauty that surrounds us every day. It celebrates
nature's remarkable creativity while reminding us that beauty is never static. Like flowers, our lives unfold in seasons of growth,
abundance, fading, and renewal. My hope is that each person who encounters this book is reminded of a garden they once
loved, a bouquet they once received or gave, or someone whose memory still blossoms in their heart. In the end, Bloom is a
celebration of nature's quiet generosity and the enduring connections that flowers create between people, places, and
memories.
